Biathlon Scoring Formula

IUKL competition rule. Competition Format & Structure category.

Rule Text by Organization

IUKL International Union of Kettlebell Lifting

IUKL Biathlon = Jerk x1 + Snatch x0.5. Example: 80 jerks + 120 snatches = 80 + 60 = 140 biathlon points. Note: Some sources describe the IUKL formula as 'Jerk x2 + Snatch x1' which is mathematically equivalent (simply doubled). The IUKL Excel and AKA PDF both use the Jerk x1 + Snatch x0.5 notation in their ranking tables.

Comparison Analysis

Biathlon scoring formulas differ significantly. IUKL/GSU/WKSF weight jerk at 1x and snatch at 0.5x. IKO uses Jerk + 1/2 Snatch (same math, different expression). GSU notes the mathematical equivalence of "Jerk x2 + Snatch x1" format.

Formula expression

IUKL/WKSF: Jerk x1 + Snatch x0.5. GSU: Jerk x2 + Snatch x1 (mathematically equivalent, just scaled). IKO: Jerk + 1/2 Snatch (same as IUKL but different notation).

Practical result

All three formulas produce the same ranking order. GSU's version just doubles all scores.

What All Organizations Agree On

  • All four organizations value jerk reps at twice the weight of snatch reps
  • The formulas produce identical ranking orders — only the absolute numbers differ

Athlete Impact: Jerk reps are worth twice snatch reps in biathlon scoring across all organizations. Prioritize jerk performance for maximum biathlon score.
