Rule Text by Organization

IKO International Kettlebell Organization

Jerk / Long Cycle (2 KB): 1 point per rep. Snatch (1 KB): 1 point per rep per hand. For women's events with 1 KB: every rep per hand equals 1 point.

IKSFA International Kettlebell Sport & Fitness Academy

Men's Jerk (2 KB): every rep = 1 point. Men's Long Cycle (2 KB): every rep = 1 point. Women's Jerk (1 KB): every rep per hand = 1 point. Women's Long Cycle (1 KB): every rep per hand = 1 point. Snatch (M and F, 1 KB): every rep per hand = 1 point.

WKSF World Kettlebell Sport Federation

Jerk / Long Cycle: 1 point per rep. Snatch (one arm): Total reps = left hand + right hand (1 point each). Biathlon score: Jerk reps x 1 + Snatch reps x 0.5. Example: 60 jerks + 120 snatches = 60 + 60 = 120 biathlon points. If Jerk score = 0, the athlete cannot perform in Snatch (biathlon is void).

IUKL International Union of Kettlebell Lifting

Jerk and Long Cycle: 1 repetition = 1 point. Snatch: reps counted directly (total of both hands). Biathlon scoring: 1 jerk rep = 1 point, 1 snatch rep = 0.5 point. Total biathlon score = jerk points + (snatch reps x 0.5). This differs from some other organizations that use different multipliers.

GSU Girevoy Sport Union

Jerk and Long Cycle: 1 repetition = 1 point. Snatch: total reps counted (sum of both hands). Biathlon uses a combined scoring formula (see biathlon_scoring_formula rule).

Comparison Analysis

Scoring is primarily rep-based but IKLF uses a unique volume-based IVSS formula (reps x KB weight) that allows cross-weight comparison.

Scoring method

Most orgs: raw repetitions within weight class. IKLF/BOLT: IVSS formula = 40 x KB_weight + Reps x KB_weight, comparing total volume. Athletes choose their own KB weight.

Cross-weight comparison

IKLF allows comparing athletes using different KB weights via the IVSS coefficient. Other orgs segregate strictly by KB weight assignment.

KB weight assignment

Most orgs assign KB weight based on weight class and gender. IKLF lets athletes choose their own KB weight (heavier = higher score multiplier).

What All Organizations Agree On

  • All organizations count repetitions as the base metric
  • Higher rep counts always mean better performance within the same parameters
Most Lenient: IKLFAthlete chooses KB weight and scores are compared via volume formula

Athlete Impact: Under IKLF, choosing a heavier kettlebell with fewer reps can outscore a lighter kettlebell with more reps. Under other orgs, you compete only against athletes using the same KB weight.
