⚖️ Registration & Weigh-In

Tiebreaker by Bodyweight

If two athletes in the same division and weight class achieve an identical score, the athlete with the lower bodyweight at weigh-in wins.

Weigh-In Procedure

Athletes must weigh in before competition. Weigh-in determines the athlete's weight class placement. The weigh-in takes place the day before or the morning of competition.

🤝 Athlete Rights, Duties & Conduct

Failed Attempts Before Set Stop

A judge may allow up to 3 failed attempts before stopping the set. However, the judge may stop the set immediately if there is apparent risk of injury to the athlete.

Set Stopped After 7 Consecutive No-Counts

A judge will stop the set if the athlete receives 7 no-counts in a row. This is not a disqualification — all previously counted good reps are retained as the athlete's score.

No Electronic Devices During Set

iPods, headphones, and other personal electronic devices are not permitted during competition sets.

Voluntary Set Termination

An athlete may voluntarily terminate their set at any time by stopping, dropping the kettlebell(s), or setting the bells down. All previously executed good repetitions are counted as the athlete's score. This is self-terminating and does not constitu...

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. Profanity, trash-talk, and heckling are prohibited. Offenders face immediate disqualification. Spectators displaying misconduct will be asked to leave the venue.

Three Warnings Per Violation Type

Three warnings of the same violation type results in disqualification and the set is stopped. However, it is possible to accrue violations of different types without disqualification — mixing violation types does not trigger automatic disqualificatio...

👔 Uniform & Apparel

Bare Hands Required

Competitors must compete with bare hands. Gloves are not permitted.

Weightlifting Belt Permitted

Athletes may wear a weightlifting belt during competition. However, resting the elbows wedged or tucked into the belt constitutes a violation. Exception: Chair press technique allows resting on the belt.

Knee Visibility Required

Athletes must wear apparel that allows the judges to see their knees. Long or short tights are mandatory. Athletes will not be allowed to compete if judges cannot see their knees.

Shirt Material Recommendation

Cotton shirts are preferred over synthetic materials for competition.

Wrist Wraps

Wrist wraps are permitted but athletes should avoid excessive thickness.

🔧 Equipment Specifications

Chalk Provided at Platform

Kettlebells and chalk will be provided at each competition platform. Athletes may use chalk (magnesium) on their hands and kettlebell handles.

Men's Adult Kettlebell Weights

Men's adult kettlebell weights: 12kg (HEALTH category), 16kg (GPP category), 24kg (SPORTING PERFECTION category), 32kg (HIGH MASTERY OF SPORT category). Jerk and Long Cycle use double kettlebells. Snatch uses single kettlebell.

Kettlebell Weight Tolerance

Competition kettlebells must conform to standard weight tolerances. All competition kettlebells have the same external dimensions regardless of weight.

🏟️ Venue & Facilities

Warm-Up Area

A warm-up area is provided at the competition venue for athletes to prepare before their sets.

⚖️ Officials & Judging

Grievance Procedure

Complaints and grievances should be directed to the head judge or competition director. Decisions by the judging panel are typically final.

Judge Count Command

Each correctly executed repetition is accompanied by a verbal count from the judge. The judge declares the count once the athlete and kettlebell are motionless in the fixation position.

No-Count Command

When a repetition does not meet the required standards, the judge issues a 'No Count' command. The repetition is not added to the athlete's score. The judge may also indicate the reason for the no-count.

Stop Command

The judge issues a 'Stop' command to terminate the set. After the stop command, the athlete must put down the kettlebell(s) and no further reps are counted. All previously executed good repetitions count as the athlete's score.

💪 General Exercise Provisions

Continuous Motion Requirement

The kettlebell must be lifted in a continuous manner. The lifting movement must not be carried out with a break or interruption.

Fixation Definition

Fixation is when the lifter and kettlebell completely stop all movement at the completion of a repetition. It is a complete and visible stop — a brief, distinct pause in the overhead fixed position is required. The overhead fixed position is vertical...

Elbow Lockout / Fixation

Elbow fixation (no movement) is required once the athlete reaches the overhead position. The elbow must be fully extended (locked out). Knees must also be fully extended. Any visible movement or instability at the elbow in the overhead position resul...

General No-Count Reasons

A repetition receives a no-count for: (1) No fixation — lifter and kettlebell do not become motionless in the overhead position, (2) Arm not vertical — overhead position less than 90 degrees perpendicular to floor, (3) Incomplete extension — elbows o...

Overhead Position Requirements

The overhead fixed position must be vertical — 90 degrees, perpendicular to the floor. The arm must be at minimum straight, positioned next to the ear/head. Positions less than vertical result in a no-count. An arm at a '10 o'clock' position (angled ...

Violation Types

Specific violations that trigger warnings: (1) Touching the bell with the free hand, (2) Resting the bell(s) on the shoulders, (3) Resting elbows wedged or tucked into the weight belt, (4) Extra swings (including pre-snatch swing), (5) Half snatching...

🏋️ Jerk (Short Cycle) Rules

Jerk No-Count: Elbow Movement After Knee Extension

If the athlete's elbows continue to move (press or push) after the knees have straightened from the second dip, the repetition receives a no-count. The arms must lock out before or simultaneously with the legs straightening. Jerk Two Distinct Knee B...

Jerk Must Not Use Press Technique

If the movement is performed using a press or push press technique instead of a jerk (with the characteristic first and second dip), the repetition receives a no-count.

Jerk Rack Position Pause

A brief rack pause is required before each jerk. The athlete must demonstrate a clear stop in the rack position with the kettlebell(s) resting on the chest and arms pressed against the trunk before initiating the next repetition.

Jerk Shoulder Rest Violation

Resting the kettlebell(s) on the shoulders (as opposed to proper rack position on the chest/forearms) constitutes a violation. Three violations of this type results in disqualification.

Jerk Valid Repetition

A valid jerk repetition requires: (1) Brief rack pause before each lift with elbows against the body, (2) Two distinct knee bends — first knee bend with bell racked, second knee bend during upward drive before elbow fixation, (3) Elbow fixation (no m...

🔄 Long Cycle (Clean & Jerk) Rules

Long Cycle Must Hit Rack Position

After the overhead fixation, the athlete must return to the rack position before dropping into the swing. The athlete must hit the rack and not drop directly from overhead into the backswing. Long Cycle Rack Pause Required: After the clean, there mu...

Long Cycle Definition

Long Cycle consists of a clean from below the knees to the rack position, followed by a jerk from rack to overhead lockout with fixation. The full clean-to-overhead sequence counts as 1 repetition. Men use 2 kettlebells, women use 1 kettlebell (alter...

Long Cycle Jerk Portion Standards

The jerk portion of long cycle follows the same standards as the standalone jerk event: two distinct knee bends, elbow fixation, overhead lockout with arms, trunk, and legs straightened.

Long Cycle Touch-and-Go Overhead

A 'touch and go' is permitted after overhead fixation — the athlete does not need to hold the overhead position for an extended duration beyond the required fixation pause.

⬆️ Snatch Rules

Snatch Definition

A single kettlebell is swung using one hand from between the knees to above the head in a single continuous motion, achieving overhead lockout with fixation. Both men and women perform snatch with 1 kettlebell.

Snatch Hand Change Rules

In the 10-minute snatch set, only one hand change is allowed. The switch can be made at any time during the set. The athlete starts snatching with one hand and must switch to the other hand with a single hand-to-hand transfer.

Snatch Knee Dip Permitted

A knee dip is allowed during the snatch to help get under the bell, with the same fixation standards as the jerk applying to the overhead position.

Snatch No Free Hand Contact

The free hand must not touch the kettlebell at any point during the lift, including in the overhead position (fixation attempt). The free arm or any other body part must not touch the platform, legs, or the arm engaged in the lift.

Snatch No Extra Swings During Set

Extra swings between snatches (swinging without completing an overhead lockout) are a violation. Three violations of this type results in disqualification and no count for the entire set.

Snatch No Initial Swing

An initial/extra swing at the start of the snatch set is a violation. If the athlete performs one swing after the START command, the judge gives the CHANGE OF HAND command (warning). If the athlete makes a swing at the beginning and continues snatchi...

Snatch Must Not Use Press Technique

If the snatch movement is performed using a press technique (pressing the bell overhead rather than a fluid snatch motion), the repetition receives a no-count.

Snatch No Rack Position Allowed

Resting in any type of rack position during snatch is prohibited. This includes resting the kettlebell on the shoulder or performing a half snatch (dropping to rack instead of a full swing down). Dropping to rack constitutes a violation — same 3-warn...

Snatch Overhead Position

The overhead fixed position in snatch must be vertical — 90 degrees, perpendicular to the floor. The arm must be at minimum straight, positioned next to the ear/head. Positions less than vertical (such as a '10 o'clock' arm position) result in a no-c...

🎯 Biathlon Rules

Biathlon Event Order

Biathlon events must be performed in order: Jerk first, then Snatch. A minimum 45-minute rest is required between the two sets. Biathlon Definition: Biathlon consists of two events: Jerk (performed first) and Snatch (performed second), with a minimu...

IKSFA Biathlon Scoring Uniqueness

IKSFA biathlon scoring is unique among kettlebell sport organizations. Men: Jerk x1 + Snatch x0.5. Women: Jerk x0.5 + Snatch x0.5 (both halved because women use 1 KB and alternate hands). This differs from IUKL (Jerk x2 + Snatch x1), WKSF (Jerk x1 + ...

Men's Biathlon Scoring Formula

Men's Biathlon scoring: Jerk reps x 1 point + Snatch total reps / 2 (0.5 points per snatch rep). Example: 35 jerks + (24 right + 40 left = 64 snatches) = 35 + (64/2) = 35 + 32 = 67 biathlon points. The snatch score is calculated from total reps with ...

Women's Biathlon Scoring Formula

Women's Biathlon scoring: Both jerk and snatch receive 0.5 points per rep. Total = (total jerk reps both hands / 2) + (total snatch reps both hands / 2). This differs from men's scoring where jerk receives full points. Women use 1 kettlebell for both...
